Periodontal disease is an infectious and degenerative condition caused by harmful bacteria in plaque. When these bacteria accumulate in your mouth, they inflame and infect your gums, and if left untreated will eventually cause gum recession, tooth loss and bone loss. Additionally, gum disease has been linked to a number of serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke, respiratory disease, osteoporosis and pregnancy complications.

Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Easy bleeding of the gums
  • Gums that are receding
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • Mouth sores
  • Changes in the fit of oral appliances
  • Changes in your bite
  • Halitosis (bad breath)

The earlier stages of gum disease (known as gingivitis) can be controlled and sometimes even reversed with thorough dental cleanings (scaling and root planing) and improved home care routines. If gum disease progresses to a more severe stage (known as periodontitis), more extensive treatments are required to keep the disease under control, and it is unlikely that you will ever completely eliminate the disease from your mouth. Treatments for periodontal disease range from deep dental cleanings to surgical procedures.

When you visit Remington Family Dental, our dentists will evaluate your mouth and develop a customized treatment plan to fight periodontal disease and improve your oral and overall health.
